I know it is not quite December yet, but I am sending an early newsletter letter this week, as we got some exciting news in regards to skating and skiing for the month of December.
We were able to sign up for a skating session at the CGC next Tuesday, December 1st. We will be going from 9:00 - 9:55. The bus will pick us up at the school at 8:45 on Tuesday morning and pick us up at the CGC at 10:10. Due to Covid there are some additional rules. Masks are mandatory on the bus as well as at the CGC in the hallways and in change rooms. Masks are not mandatory on the ice. Please send a mask to school with your child on Tuesday. If you need to rent skates, please email me, so that I can reserve them at least 24 hours before we arrive. Rental is $4.00. Use of personal skates is strongly encouraged by the CGC. As in previous years, helmets and mitts are also mandatory in order to access the ice. We will be only one class at a time skating this year. I am looking for at least 2 parent volunteers that can stay with us on the ice for the entire skating period. I am also looking for volunteers to help tie skates when we first arrive. Please let me know if you can join us.
The class is signed up for cross-country skiing lessons with the ‘Ski S’Cool’ program. The dates are December 8th, 11th and 15th. I will need 2-3 parent volunteers for each of these outings, please let me know if you’re available to help out. The cost for the ski program is $20. I will be sending home an information handout and registration form for the Ski S’Cool shortly. Thank you for filling out the form and sending it back to me as soon as possible. Please send the $20 fee to school at that time as well. You can either pay cash or pay by cheque made out to EWES. Lastly, masks will be mandatory for the bus rides to and from skiing, so please send a mask with your child on those days.
Interim report cards will be going home on Friday, December 11th. Please look for them in your child’s pochette.
The last day of school before the break is December 18th. The class will have PJ day that day.
Starting Tuesday, December 1st, we will have an Advent calendar of kindness in the class. Each morning, someone will open a note from the advent calendar and read it to the class. The students will be asked to do a different act of kindness each day. Please check in with your child in the evenings of a school day and ask him/her about it. Thank you!
Also, we will need some shoe boxes for a project in January. We will need 9 total. If you happen to have one or may come across one over the holidays, can you please hold on to it for us? Thank you!
Thank you for all your help and support. Stay healthy and safe! Kind regards, Madame Nicola ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ November 2nd, 2020 Dear Eagle Parents,
What a wintry surprise to wake up to this morning! That was quite something! I wasn’t sure if I was going to make it out of our driveway.
We had a busy Halloween week in class with beautiful costumes and fun activities. I hope you had a great time trick or treating. I uploaded some photos of the students in their costumes onto the class website for you to see, please take a look. here.
We have been working on Unit 3 in Fundations for the past couple of weeks and will be completing the unit test shortly. A new handout will go home some time next week for you to see what trick words and new concepts we will be working on over the coming weeks.
During writing, students had been working on making lists, today we started working on descriptive writing. Students are learning about the importance of adjectives and will compose short descriptive texts.
In math, we are starting addition. We will be working on finding ways to add 2 numbers to make 10, as well as adding other numbers up to 12, eventually up to 20.
For science, we have been working on discussing natural and artificial objects, as well as natural and artificial sounds and will be exploring natural and artificial light next. For one of the activities, students will need to bring a flash light to class some time soon. I will send an email out the day before to let you know. We will then also explore objects in the sky.
On Tuesday, November 10th, a visitor from YWCHSB will come to the class to do a safety lesson with the students.
Wednesday, November 11th, is Remembrance Day, no classes.

Welcome to the Eagle class and welcome to Grade 1. My name is Nicola Dietz, students call me Madame Nicola. I have greatly enjoyed the community of students and staff here at WES for the past 14 years and am very much looking forward to teaching your child in Grade 1 this year.
Here are a few ideas to keep in mind as we begin the new school year.
Class newsletter & class website: I will be updating you on a regular basis through newsletters and emails. At the beginning of each month a newsletter will be posted on the class website https://madamenicola.weebly.com/ A reminder will be sent out via email once the new letter is available online. I am using the email addresses that are on file at the office. If you would like me to use another email address, please let me know.
I also use the website to occasionally post photos of students during class activities and outings, so that parents can partake in some of the fun we are having. If you prefer for your child’s pictures not be uploaded on the class website please let me know via email. Thank you.
Pochette: Important school notes and eventually reading homework will be sent home in your child’s pochette. Please remove and read all information that comes home and leave the plastic sleeve in the pochette. I also encourage you to include notes or information for me in the pochette as I will be checking them each morning.
Please take the time to fill out the ‘About My Child’ form and return to me as soon as you can. Also, a package from the office is coming your way shortly. Please sign the forms and return to school.
Mme Isabel Beauregard: I will be teaching your child on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays this year. Mme Isabel is going to be teaching on Wednesdays. Most of your children already know Mme Isabel as she was the PhysEd teacher for the K classes last year. She was also working as an Educational Assistant in my class part time and teaching my Wednesdays last year, so she is very familiar with class routines and teaching styles which will make for an easy transition. Mme Isabel is also going to be your child’s PhysEd teacher this year. I will provide details of the shared schedule during our ‘meet the parent’ zoom in a couple of weeks.
Photo: Please send a family photo to school with your child this week. We will be making a family portrait bulletin board and will soon learn French vocabulary to talk about our families. Thank you!
Toys, trading cards and other treasure: As part of our routine, the Eagle Class will have some play time in our classroom; however, personal toys, trading cards and other treasures are expected to stay home in order to avoid heartache if lost.
If you have not yet done so, please remember to pay the $70 activity and school supply fee. You can pay cash or by cheque. Cheques need to be made out to Whitehorse Elementary School. Thanks!
If there is anything I can do to make your child’s learning experience more rewarding, please feel free to let me know. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at the school (667-8083) or email me at email@example.com. I can meet with parents after school or sometimes during lunch, if you contact me beforehand, so we can set up an appointment.
